For the Southern Caucasus Justice Project Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) and Russian Justice Initiative (RJI) seek

1) Full-time lawyer in Tbilisi, Georgia;

2) Full-time legal/ administrative assistant in Tbilisi, Georgia;

3) Part-time (50%) consultant in South Ossetia.

The Southern Caucasus Justice Project aims to:

    - thoroughly document grave human rights abuses in the Russian-Georgian conflict;

    - provide free legal advice to victims of human rights abuses and their families;

    - initiate legal proceedings on behalf of selected clients; and

    - actively pursue cases through Russian, Georgian and international institutions.

GYLA is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting human rights and the rule of law. We adhere to the Constitution of Georgia, legislation and our Statute on the whole territory of Georgia. GYLA is a membership-based organization. www.gyla.ge

RJI is, a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental organization, based in the Netherlands with offices in Russia. RJI currently represents more than a thousand clients from the North Caucasus in 150 cases pending before the European Court. www.srji.org

Job descriptions:

The positions are open to qualified individuals of any nationality. The ideal candidate shall be committed to justice and respect for human rights; creative and able to work with minimal guidance or supervision. The positions are for one year (until end of 2009).

The full-time lawyer in Tbilisi is responsible for:

    · Conducting field research to identify potential cases;

    · Interviewing potential applicants;

    · Preparing applications to the European Court of Human Rights;

    · Drafting complaints to the relevant Russian/Georgian Bodies

    - Supervising the legal/administrative assistant in Tbilisi.

The full-time legal/ administrative assistant is responsible for:

    · Providing administrative support to the Tbilisi lawyer;

    · If necessary, accompany the lawyer on field missions.

    · If necessary, perform other tasks as may be assigned.

The part-time consultant in South Ossetia is responsible for:

    · Conducting field research in South Ossetia to identify potential cases;

    · Interviewing potential applicants;

    · Preparing applications to the European Court of Human Rights

Qualifications:

For Full-time lawyer in Tbilisi, Georgia

    · Fluency (written and oral) in Georgian. Good knowledge of Russian and English= would be an asset.

    · Law degree or equivalent;

    · Field research experience;

    · Background in human rights. Familiarity with the European Court of Human Rights is an asset;

    · Experience working for a non-governmental organization or in legal aid;

    · Collegiality; strong interpersonal and writing skills; computer literacy.

For Full-time legal/ administrative assistant in Tbilisi, Georgia

    · Fluency (written and oral) in Georgian and either Russian or English;

    · Very strong computer skills;

    · Legal background is an asset;

For part-time consultant in South-Ossetia

    · Fluency (written and oral) in Russian; Knowledge of Ossetian or Georgian is an asset;

    · Experience working in a conflict zone;

    · Extensive field research experience;

    · Law degree or equivalent is an asset;

    · Background in human rights. Familiarity with the European Court of Human Rights is an asset;

    · Collegiality; strong interpersonal and writing skills; computer literacy.
