The European Court of Human Rights today unanimously condemned Russia for the enforced disappearance of a young man in Chechnya in February 2003, Russian Justice Initiative said.

Russia loses Eight Cases from Chechnya at the Strasbourg Court

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg today condemned Russia for human rights abuses in Chechnya, Russian Justice Initiative said today. In five cases the Court held Russia responsible for the enforced disappearance of five men between May 2001 and November 2002 in different locations in Chechnya. One case each concerned the indiscriminate shelling of Grozny in January 2000 and the extra-judicial killing of a man in September 2003. In the eighth case the Court faulted Russia for the ineffective investigation into the disappearance of a trainee police officer in February 2003.
